I’ll do even better than that!  I’ll give you 5 reasons to get outdoors and 5 reasons to walk.  That’s 10 reasons to hit those trails.  Are you ready?

The Great Outdoors

  1. It helps you get your Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for your bones, your blood cells and immune system.  It helps your body absorb minerals like calcium and phosphorus.  Getting 5-15 minutes of sun a few times a week is all that is needed.  You can get it on cloudy days as well; it just takes a little longer.  In other words, NO EXCUSES!

  1. It boosts your creativity

Does a problem have you stuck?  Take it outside.  Performance in creative problem-solving was increased when being outside was combined with disconnection from multimedia and technology.  In other words, you can enjoy nature’s beauty without posting on Instagram.

  1. It protects your vision

Studies have shown a correlation between increased time outside between the ages 14-29 and a decreased in myopia (nearsightedness) in middle age.  For adults, time outside away from a computer screen, can reduce eye strain.

  1. It lifts your mood

When you’re feeling blue, get into the green.  Being outside and exposure to natural light is shown to be conducive to higher self-esteem and a better mood.

  1. It boosts your immune system

There is some research that indicates that phytoncides, – produced by plants, increases our production of white blood cells which help fight off infections and disease.

Walk This Way

  1. It’s heart-healthy

Walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease by 19 percent.  And walking further or longer can reduce that risk even more.

  1. You’ll burn calories

I had to say it because I know some of you wanted to see it.  I won’t get into intervals, or climbing hills, or anything else to boost that calorie burn.  It’s simple.  If you want to lose weight, start walking.

  1. You’ll sleep better

Research by the Sleep Foundation found that people, who exercised regularly, including walking, fell asleep quicker, slept longer and had better quality sleep.  Finding sheep to count on your walk is not required.

  1. It can help your bones and joints

Numerous studies have shown that weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, can slow bone loss.  Walking also helps lubricate joints that helps alleviate the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis.

  1. Saves money

No fancy equipment, no gym membership.  Just grab your shoes and go (and some people consider those optional).  And walking can save you money in healthcare.  There are a lot of studies with a lot of terms I don’t understand but I was able to understand that those who exercise regularly have 23% lower healthcare costs.
